Like the Island of Mallorca in Spain – only quieter, cheaper, and without the island markup

A summer secret spot with postcard views – but on the mainland

You’re gazing at turquoise water, breathing in the scent of pine trees, and the only sound is the sea? Sounds like Mallorca – but it’s not. This mainland beach doesn’t just look like a postcard, it’s also much quieter, more affordable, and surprisingly close. No concrete hotels, no loud beach clubs with minimum spend. Just nature, charm – and the feeling that you’ve discovered something not everyone knows yet.

As a travel blogger and photographer, I’ve been to a lot of places, but this one truly captured my summer heart. And that’s exactly why I want to share it with you.

Punta Rata is located along the Croatian Adriatic coast, about 1.5 hours south of Split. No ferry, no island transfers, no travel drama – just a smooth drive with a rental car, a deep breath, and you’re there. Especially in July, when most Mediterranean destinations are overcrowded and overpriced, this stretch of coast offers everything we dream of in a summer holiday – just with a little more ease.

Yes, it’s livelier in high season. But Punta Rata still holds onto a calmness that many other places have lost. I was at the water’s edge around seven in the morning – the light was soft, the sea perfectly still, and all around me were just a few locals strolling barefoot through the sand with coffee in hand.

By midday, you retreat into the shade of the pine trees. Or treat yourself to grilled sea bream at a small konoba just above the bay. No multilingual menus, no gimmicks. Just whatever the fisherman brought in that morning – and you can taste the difference.

What really impressed me was how versatile the coastline is. If you’re not in the mood to just lounge around, Punta Rata is perfect for snorkeling or kayaking – you can rent gear locally or bring your own if you’re driving from Germany. The water is so clear, you can spot fish and rocks even from the shore. And in the early morning or late afternoon, the sea is as calm as a lake – perfect for a peaceful paddle along the cliffs.

If you’re craving a change of scenery, there are several day trips worth taking. About 1.5 hours away lies Krka National Park – a natural wonder with emerald pools, cascading waterfalls, and wooden walkways through lush wilderness. Swimming is allowed in some spots, and there are shaded picnic areas that make for the perfect nature break.

Roughly two hours away is the harbor city of Zadar, known for its famous Sea Organ – a structure that literally plays music using the waves. Next to it, the “Greeting to the Sun” light installation glows as the sun melts into the sea. For me, it’s one of the most atmospheric places in Croatia.

Almost en route is the charming little town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets, Venetian architecture, and cobblestone alleys that feel like a film set. It’s ideal for a half-day trip full of old-world charm, photo opportunities, and a cappuccino by the marina.

Trogir is a historic town on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, known for its well-preserved old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is characterized by its charming medieval streets, impressive architecture, and a picturesque location between the mainland and the island of Čiovo.

Who is Punta Ratac perfect for?

For you – if you are tired of mass tourism but don’t want to miss out on Mediterranean charm. For women like us, who have a sense of aesthetics and long for a break that is not meticulously planned, but simply beautiful. For everyone who enjoys strolling barefoot to the water in the morning, reading a book in the shade at noon, and gazing at the rocks with a glass of wine in the evening.

Tips for your stay

  • Arrival: The nearest airport is Split. From there, it takes about 1.5 hours by rental car – the coastal road alone is a highlight!

  • Accommodations: Small guesthouses, charming apartments, or boutique hotels with a sea view. My tip: book early, but not through the big platforms – many landlords prefer to work directly and appreciate a personal inquiry.

  • Food & Drink: The regional cuisine is simple, honest, and delicious. Fish, olive oil, fresh herbs – often served in small family-run establishments. And yes, there is also the perfect spot for a romantic dinner right over the cliffs.

Those arriving in Split can also consider staying a night here to enjoy the old town; it’s worth it!

Split at Night

And if you’re up for traveling even further south, the coast ends in a grand finale: Dubrovnik, about four hours away. The city is world-famous – not only for its stunning old town and city walls, but also as a filming location for “Game of Thrones.” Dubrovnik was the real-life backdrop for King’s Landing, and yes, you can literally walk in the footsteps of Cersei, Tyrion & Co. There are GoT-themed tours, but the real magic lies in wandering the streets freely, soaking up the atmosphere – and climbing the city walls at sunset. I recommend staying at least two nights so you can experience Dubrovnik in peace, early in the morning when the alleys are still quiet.

My verdict? Punta Rata is the kind of summer holiday we used to dream of – a little adventure, a touch of dolce vita, and a whole lot of real relaxation. And the best part? You don’t need an island to get there. Just a car. Or better yet – a swim.
